Asheri Fort, also known as Asherigad, stands as a significant historical monument in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. Situated approximately 102 kilometers away from Mumbai and 88 kilometers from Thane, it perches atop the hills near Mendhavan Khind, accessible via the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. The fort’s maintenance and restoration efforts have been undertaken by the inhabitants of its base village, Khodkona, a quaint tribal hamlet.
Originally constructed by the Bhojraja of the Shilahara dynasty, Asherigad has witnessed a tumultuous past. It was seized by Bimb Raja of Mahim (Palghar) from the Kolis. The 17th century saw the Mughals briefly taking over the fort, only for it to be swiftly reclaimed by the Portuguese. Nestled within Khodkona village along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway, the fort is a part of the Thane District.
Rising to a height of 510 meters, the Asherigad or Asheri Fort is a towering presence in the Manor region of Palghar, having changed hands among various rulers over the centuries.
