Overview

Kedarnath Dham also known as Kedarnath Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, which are the holiest shrines of Shiva in India. The temple is situated in the Garhwal Himalayas, near the Mandakini River, in the state of Uttarakhand.

The temple’s history is steeped in legend and is believed to have been built by the Pandavas, the heroes of the epic Mahabharata. It is also associated with Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher and theologian who is said to have died in the vicinity.

Kedarnath Dham is part of the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. The temple is open to visitors from April to November, as it remains closed during the harsh winter months when it is covered in snow.

The temple’s architecture is a fine example of North-Indian Himalayan style and stands at an elevation of 3,583 meters above sea level, making it the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas. Despite being remote and accessible only by a challenging trek from Gaurikund, Kedarnath Dham continues to be a symbol of spiritual significance and natural beauty.

Badrinath Dham, also known as the Badrinarayan Temple, is one of the four sacred pilgrimage sites in India, collectively known as the Char Dham. Located in Uttarakhand’s Badrinath town, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is perched at an elevation of around 3,100 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas

The temple is believed to have been established by sage Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and is open for worship for six months each year, from May to October. During winter, it remains closed due to heavy snowfall. The temple’s architecture showcases traditional Garhwali wooden design and is situated between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges, with the Alaknanda River flowing nearby.

Visitors to Badrinath Dham can also explore other attractions such as the village of Mana, which is the last village before the Indian border, and offers a glimpse into rural life with its serene natural beauty. Additionally, there are several ashrams in Badrinath that provide a peaceful retreat for meditation and yoga.

The best time to visit Badrinath Dham is during the warmer months when the temple is open for darshan. The ideal travel period is from May to October, with the temple closing from October/November and reopening around April. For those planning a pilgrimage or a visit, it’s recommended to book well in advance due to the high number of pilgrims each year.
