Overview

Bastar, located in the state of Chhattisgarh, India, is a district rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Known for its dense forests, high hills, waterfalls, caves, and diverse wildlife, Bastar offers a unique experience for tourists seeking adventure and a glimpse into tribal life.

The district’s headquarters, Jagdalpur, is a gateway to several natural attractions, including the famous Chitrakoot and Teerathgarh waterfalls

Bastar’s population is predominantly tribal, with communities like the Gond, Maria, Muriya, Bhatra, Halba, and Dhruva, who are known for their rich artwork, liberal culture, and innate connection with nature. The tribal communities still reside in dense forests, preserving their traditional way of life.

Historically, the region has been mentioned in epic tales like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, adding a layer of mythological significance to its already enchanting landscape. Bastar was once part of the princely state of the same name and has a storied past that includes rule by the Kakatiya Dynasty and later by Maharaja Praveer Chandra Bhanj Dev.

For those interested in arts and crafts, Bastar is a treasure trove of indigenous handiwork, including the famed Bastar iron craft, bell metal art, and tribal jewelry, which reflect the skill and creativity of the local artisans.

In summary, Bastar is not just a travel destination; it’s an experience that connects you with the roots of India’s tribal heartland, offering a blend of natural splendor and cultural richness that is both educational and exhilarating.
